COMRADE TYLER:

Isn’t progress/improvement/growth great? Take technology for example. Thanks to advancements in the field, last Friday I was able to listen to play-by-play of my alma mater Madison Central on Internet radio and watch South Panola on ESPNU-from Nashville. This wouldn’t have been possible four years ago.

Now take Chris Relf. Thanks to a new coaching staff that can actually develop a quarterback, Relf looked quite poised and sharp as he tossed three touchdowns and ran for another in the season opening win against Jackson State. It was a far cry from the shellacking he took at the Egg Bowl, just 10 months ago. Last Saturday, Relf was able to complete the “easy” throws, and due to a make-shift offensive line, Relf was able to extend plays with his feet. Basically, he looked like a competent quarterback. And as any Mississippi State fan will say, we’ll take it.

Jackson State quarterback (and Mississippi State transfer) Trae Rutland had to be thinking, “Well, shit. That could have been me.”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m well aware this was against an atrocious Jackson State defense so I’m not reading that much into his performance. Sooner rather than later, Relf is going to make a mistake – a costly one. When he was getting comfortable in the fourth quarter, you could tell he was starring down his targets before releasing the ball. But I love the progress he’s made under Mullen and Co. And who knows. With more time, reps and guidance, he could actually turn out to be a quality SEC signal-caller. Under Croom’s tutelage, he probably would have been weighing his options between Alabama A&M and McNeese State.

Other observations-
*I thought the signing of JUCO-stud Sean Brauchle was going to solve our kicking woes? I understand the weather was crappy but pushing two kicks wide right? Somewhere in a Gulfport sports bar, Adam Carlson was laughing under his breath. I’m sure Brauchle will make the necessary corrections but those misses will stick in the back of my mind the rest of the season.

*Who the hell do you think you are, Rick Comegy? We give you and Jackson State $315,000 and we’re cheap!? I know a financially floundering SWAC school in Itta Bena that would have done back flips for that kind of payday. And what an awesome, read-between-the-lines-go-to-hell from Greg Byrne. “We understand the significance of having an in-state game such as this and that’s why we were willing to pay Jackson State a much higher rate than we’ve ever paid an FCS team before that has visited our campus,” the State A.D. said.

Hell, at least the Tigers didn’t win and have their players thank us for the check as they left, like other lesser programs have… Thanks, Croom.

*Another quote via the best Mississippi State beat reporter since Sekou Smith, the Clarion-Leder’s Kyle Veazey…Arnil Stallworth on Anthony Dixon. “I see an extra burst of speed when he runs the ball, finishes every drill … He hated not playing (against) his hometown (school, Jackson State). He hated missing that first game. But I know he’s going to come back to Auburn with a vengeance,” Stallworth said.

I’m digging that because we’ll need a stout running game against Auburn.

One win down. Five to go. PapaJohns.com Bowl, here we come!
